Queen mating nucs are smaller sized hives where a queen cell emerges, goes on her mating flight, and begins to lay. These are smaller sized hives as many are transported to mating sites, also, it is easier to find or catch the queen when moving to another hive or making her available for sale.

Ripple Farm offers two mating nuc systems, both are High Density polystyrene versions from our friends at Lyson in Poland. These offer the best insulating qualities, giving the small colony inside the very best chance to thrive

Polystyrene beehives have become more and more popular. Low weight, durability and unsurpassed insulating qualities make them especially useful in migratory apiaries, but they are also used in stationary professional and hobbyist operations.

There are multiple reasons for their increase in popularity. Ease of decontamination, durability and high level of aesthetics.  High thermal insulation properties provide perfect thermal conditions for our climate, bees that are kept insulated use a lot less of their honey stores to maintain hive temperature.

Advantages of polystyrene beehives:

  • Excellent thermal insulation properties
  • Resistance to moisture
  • Lightness of components which make easier feeding, harvesting and managment of  migratory apiaries
  • Long-life expectancy, if painted and treated well, the boxes will last forever
  • Strong and durable construction
  • Environmental performance (no risk for environment, non-leaching)
  • Compatibility of all elements
